Published October 07, 2008 11:09 am - The “OK Select” heifer sale will be October 25, at the CMC Angus Cattle Company in Miami, Okla.

OK Select sale slated in Miami, Oklahoma

The Ottawa/Craig Counties Cattleman’s Association (OCCCA) is providing an opportunity for cow/calf producers in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas to purchase bred replacement heifers and fall cow/calf pairs that are developed on a fescue environment in this area. The OCCCA working with local veterinaries have developed a health and vaccination program that should be beneficial to everyone’s herd health. To start with, all heifers have to be calfhood vaccinated against Brucellosis (Bangs). In addition to calfhood vaccination, heifers are vaccinated for IBR, BVD, PI-3, and BRSV. Heifers are also vaccinated for Vibriosis, Leptospirosis and 7-way Clostridium.

The heifers offered in the “OK Select” heifer sale are from producers who have been in the cattle business for many years. Buyers have the chance to take advantage of established breeding programs to improve their own herd genetics. Many heifers are AI sired and AI bred.

All the heifers offered in the sale have been selected and developed from cow/calf operations that utilize fescue pastures. This should allow these heifers to be accustomed to fescue nutrition and should perform in fescue environments without adverse effects.

The heifers are guaranteed by the producers for thirty days after the sale to be pregnant. All heifers will have a veterinary perform a pregnancy exam at the sale. This will give buyers a greater chance of grouping heifers of similar stages in production together.

The “OK Select” heifer sale will be October 25, at the CMC Angus Cattle Company in Miami, Okla. Lunch will be free starting at 11:30 a.m. with the sale to start at 1 p.m. Registration for door prizes will start early in the morning. Consignments of door prizes include a number of different kinds of caps, concrete feed trough, a hay conserver hay feeder, and many other items.

This year the sale will have a number of booth displays by local companies. People attending the sale will have a chance to visit with Phillips Feed Mill, Jorgenson Farm Equipment, Boehringer Ingelim Vetmedica, Dixon Farm Supply, Dow Agro Sciences, S & I Concrete Products, Go-Bobs Pipe and Steel, and Welch State Bank. These companies are the lunch sponsors for the sale, and they are there to assist you with your cow/calf operation.

The cow/calf pairs are two year old cows with a fall born calf at their side. Cow/calf pairs have followed the same vaccination program as the bred heifers.
