Area cowboys earn ranch rodeo awards

Parsons, Kansas — Area cowboys had a good run at the recent annual World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas.

The reserve champion team was Lonesome Pine Ranch of Cedar Point, Kan., with Top Hand honors going to Chris Potter of Lonesome Pine. Other team members were Bud, Frank, Makenzie and Troy Higgs; and Brian Peak.

Kolby Stock of KW Cattle Co. and Diamond E Ranch, Fort Scott and Redfield, Kan., was the reserve top hand. Other team members included Travis Duncan, Coy Hyer and Jeff Madison.

Sandhill Cattle Co. of Earth, Texas, earned top team honors.

Broken H Ranch and Stierwalt Ranch, Bronson, Kan., and Shidler, Okla., was the third place team. Team members included Bruce Beeman; Cliff, Sage and Doug Hall; and Shane and Lane Stierwalt

Area teams earning event wins include:

•Stray gathering— Arndt Ranch and Bailey Ranch, Emporia and Cottonwood Falls, Kan.

•Ranch bronc riding—Whitmire Land and Cattle & Sweetwater Cattle, Nowata County and Newkirk, Okla.

•Wild cow milking— KW Cattle Co. and Diamond E Ranch, Fort Scott and Redfield, Kan.

•Team penning— Lonesome Pine Ranch, Cedar Point, Kan. £

  • Ergot hits Mo. pastures

    The first two weeks of July are prime time for ergot to appear in common pasture grasses, said University of Missouri Extension forage specialist Craig Roberts.
    Wet, cool weather, followed by heat and humidity, creates favorable conditions for the disease. “With the amount of moisture in the ground and in the plants, the state turns into an incubator when it gets hot,” Roberts said.
